Utilities, internet and phones
Our model puts utilities and gas at about $165 a month for a couple in Mérida, most of it electricity for air-conditioning in the hot months — without heavy AC use the total budget falls to about $2,710. Internet and two mobile plans add about $60.
- Electricity is billed by CFE every two months, with subsidized rates for low household use — heavy users pay much higher rates, which is why AC can make bills jump.
- Gas is either piped or delivered in refillable tanks (cilindros) or a rooftop tank (estacionario).
- Water is usually cheap; buy large bottles (garrafones) or use a filter for drinking.
- Internet fiber is widely available in cities; ask which providers serve a building before you sign a lease.
Mérida's seasons: pleasant (november–february) — warm days and cooler nights — the most comfortable months. hot (april–june) — daytime highs often pass 40°C; air-conditioning becomes essential. humid and stormy (june–november) — afternoon storms during the Atlantic hurricane season.
Getting around: car or no car?
The historic center is laid out on a grid of numbered streets and is walkable early and late in the day. Rideshares and taxis are widely used, and a car is handy for the northern suburbs, the coast and day trips. Tren Maya connects Mérida with other cities on the peninsula.
In our model a couple spends about $95 a month on transport without a car. Keeping a car — insurance, fuel, maintenance and parking — raises the total to about $2,985. Foreign-plated cars need a temporary import permit.

What the exchange rate does to your budget
Most costs in Mérida are paid in pesos, so if your income is in dollars your budget moves with the exchange rate. Our figures assume 18 pesos per dollar. If peso prices stay the same:
| Pesos per US dollar | Comfortable couple / month |
|---|---|
| 16 | $3,173 |
| 18 | $2,820 |
| 20 | $2,538 |
Rents in tourist areas are sometimes quoted in dollars, which shields them from these swings.
Budget versus the residency income test
Living costs and visa requirements are separate tests. To get temporary residency on income you need about $4,432 a month at the standard 2026 threshold — consulates publish their own figures — while our comfortable budget for a single person in Mérida is about $1,925.
How to spend less in Mérida
- Rent outside the most popular neighborhoods — the biggest saving available. A lean budget for a couple here is about $2,105.
- Sign a 12-month lease in pesos after you arrive, rather than renting furnished places listed for tourists.
- Shop at markets (mercados and tianguis) for produce, and buy local brands.
- Eat the comida corrida — the set lunch at local restaurants.
- Watch your air-conditioning: electricity prices rise steeply for heavy users, so AC in one room rather than the whole house makes a real difference.
- Skip the car if the city allows it, and use buses and rideshares.
- Move money cheaply — see banking in Mexico.
